PORT HUENEME, Calif. — A routine drive home took a dramatic turn for Information Systems Technician 2nd Class (IT2) Donovan Asberry when he found himself at the center of a life-saving event. On August 19, 2024, while driving along the I-5 freeway in Downey, Asberry witnessed a car crash into the median, prompting him to spring into action.
Asberry, utilizing his recent CPR training, quickly identified the driver’s abnormal breathing. “I noticed deep breaths with unusual pauses. It was unlike anything I’d seen before,” said Asberry. His decisive actions, paired with those of a fellow bystander, led to breaking the car window, securing the vehicle, and pulling the driver out to deliver aid.
