Bahrain Signs MoU for Sustainable Ship Recycling Initiative with Maersk

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, and A.P. Moller – Maersk to evaluate and establish a ship recycling initiative in the Kingdom of Bahrain, according to a release from the company.

Key Aspects of the MoU

  • Regulatory Support: The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce will provide regulatory backing to ASRY, which will be responsible for equipping the yard and docks with the necessary facilities for the ship recycling process.
  • Technical and Operational Advisory: A.P. Moller – Maersk, an integrated logistics company, will act as the technical and operational advisor. Maersk will provide expertise on implementing sustainable practices and responsible standards in ship recycling.
  • Steel Recycling: SULB will utilize the steel obtained from the ship recycling process, further processing and recycling it for both local and international markets.

Objectives and Significance

This MoU is the first of its kind in Bahrain and aims to develop a ship recycling and green steel ecosystem by fostering collaboration between the government and industry stakeholders. The initiative is designed to ensure sustainability throughout the entire process, aligning with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

About the Partners

  • Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications (MTT): The government body responsible for the development and regulation of Bahrain’s transportation and telecommunications infrastructure and systems.
  • A.P. Moller – Maersk: An integrated logistics company working to connect and simplify customers’ supply chains. Operating in more than 130 countries and employing around 100,000 people, Maersk will provide critical expertise for the ship recycling initiative.
