Eternal Brotherhood Marines Unite in Times Square for Fleet Week 2024

NEW YORK, NY – The enduring motto “Once a Marine, always a Marine” came to life as past, present, and future Marines stood together in formation in Times Square on May 22, 2024. This powerful display of camaraderie kicked off New York City’s Fleet Week 2024.

The event highlighted the heritage and traditions passed down through generations of Marines. Veterans shared their pride and experiences, providing civilians a glimpse into what it means to be a Marine. “We will last and echo throughout the generations like we see with this formation,” said the 20th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, Carlos Ruiz.

Under the gaze of the Father Duffy Statue, hundreds of Marines and civilians gathered. Active duty Marines in Dress Blue Delta uniforms and future Marines, known as “poolees,” preparing for Marine Corps Recruit Depots, stood side by side. “It is a line which every Marine knows and understands: you are never alone,” remarked Brig. Gen. Anthony Henderson.

Ruiz called upon all Marines, past and present, to join the formation. Men and women from the crowd stepped forward, assuming the position of attention, symbolizing the timeless bond among Marines. “Those Marine veterans standing in front of me are the reason why the active duty Marines standing behind me are where they are today,” Ruiz said. “And also the reason why the young men and women standing next to me aspire to be a part of the same organization.”

Fleet Week New York 2024 will feature numerous events over the next six days, including tours of the USS Intrepid, military vehicle displays, and performances by the USMC Silent Drill Platoon and Quantico Marine Corps Band. These events showcase the expertise and patriotism of America’s maritime services.

Fleet Week allows Marines, Sailors, and Coast Guardsmen to interact with local communities. This 36th annual celebration invites New Yorkers and tri-state area residents to engage with active service members and honor those who have served. “We must connect the civilian population with today’s Marines, Coast Guard, Navy, you name it!” emphasized Ruiz.
