Vice Chief of Naval Operations Visits Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory

Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class Tanner Kernan, assigned to the USS John C. Stennis, recently became a neighborhood hero after saving a young girl from drowning. The incident unfolded at an apartment complex’s pool, where Kernan was spending his afternoon. He observed a father suddenly dive into the water to rescue his daughter, prompting Kernan to act decisively.

Witnessing the father struggle to administer CPR, Kernan, drawing from his volunteer firefighter training, immediately took over. “I started CPR right away, focusing on chest compressions and ensuring her airway was clear,” said Kernan. Despite a broken foot, Kernan prioritized the child’s safety, hopping on one foot to perform the life-saving measure.

The child soon regained consciousness, and by the time emergency responders arrived, she was stable. She was hospitalized overnight but released the following morning without any lingering effects. Kernan credits his swift action to his CPR training, which he obtained before joining the Navy in 2021.

The girl’s family expressed their deep gratitude for Kernan’s intervention, crediting his knowledge and courage with saving their daughter’s life. In recognition of his actions, Kernan received the Navy Commendation Medal from Capt. J. Patrick Thompson, who praised Kernan’s dedication.

Reflecting on the event, Kernan expressed his joy in being able to help, despite his injury. This incident has inspired him to further his career in emergency medical services. Currently serving with the Navy, he has plans to start EMT training, aspiring to become a paramedic and pursue an advanced degree in emergency medicine.
