Vice Chief of Naval Operations Visits Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory

WASHINGTON – On October 12, 2024, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower & Reserve Affairs, Franklin R. Parker, attended a significant event at the University of Alabama. His presence at the football game between the University of Alabama and the University of South Carolina Gamecocks was marked by his efforts to promote the Department of the Navy’s Maritime Statecraft initiative. The visit underscored the extensive career opportunities available within the Navy, both in civilian capacities and military service.

Alabama’s historical contribution to U.S. naval efforts remains crucial, serving as a fertile ground for maritime workforce development. The state has been a key player in bolstering national security through its affiliation with the National Call to Maritime Service. This initiative aims to draw skilled individuals to naval careers, further supported by the co-sponsorship of the event by BuildSubmarines.com. Such collaborations echo the combined efforts of government and industry to fortify U.S. security.

During his visit, Secretary Parker emphasized the importance of attracting elite talent to the Navy. He remarked, “In an era where the stakes are incredibly high, we must attract and retain top-tier talent. We are committed to raising awareness of the critical openings available for individuals to leverage their talents, develop their skills, and pursue their passions through a career of public service.” The Navy offers a unique opportunity for personal and professional growth at the forefront of defense efforts.

The expansion of the submarine industrial base signals a new development phase for the Navy. A recent strategic acquisition of an Alabama Shipyard by the Department highlights this growth. This move is anticipated to increase submarine production capabilities and generate approximately 3,000 sustainable jobs, uplifting the region’s socio-economic landscape.

Matt Sermon, Executive Director of Program Executive Office Strategic Submarines, articulated the significance of public-private partnerships. “By investing together with industry in Alabama, we’re not just increasing our ability to build the next generation of submarines but creating a hub for innovation, advanced manufacturing, and workforce development,” he said. This vision presents a compelling opportunity for University of Alabama students and the local community to contribute to national security.

The submarine industrial base offers targeted opportunities for University of Alabama students, aiming to cultivate a workforce essential to maintaining and advancing the Navy’s capabilities. This initiative not only promises innovation but also ensures a significant role in securing the nation’s future maritime strength.
