During its port call in Cyprus, the USS Wasp along with the 24th MEU(SOC) will enjoy a brief respite and engage in community activities in partnership with the Agios Stefanos Foundation.

“Our Sailors and Marines are eager to immerse themselves in Cypriot culture, savor the local cuisine, and contribute to community service,” stated Capt. Christopher Purcell, commanding officer of USS Wasp. “Such port visits fortify our ties with allied nations and enhance our mutual values and camaraderie.”

The Republic of Cyprus remains a pivotal port for U.S. Navy vessels operating in the Mediterranean. Notably, in August 2023, the USS Ramage docked in Limassol as part of the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group. Later, in November, USS Mount Whitney arrived in Larnaca, offering its crew a chance to experience the locality while deployed from Gaeta, Italy.

Earlier this year in February, the USS Bataan and the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, during their deployment, also made a port stop in Larnaca.

Limassol signifies the USS Wasp’s second leisure port since its deployment that started on June 1.

Since April, the amphibious assault ship has been actively engaged in operations across the Atlantic and Mediterranean. As the flagship of the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group (WSP ARG), USS Wasp, along with USS New York and USS Oak Hill, is on a mission in the NAVEUR-NAVAF region. Their objective is to bolster U.S. and allied interests, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean, ensuring regional security and preventing hostilities.

The 24th MEU(SOC), designed for swift and nimble operations, is a formidable Marine Air-Ground Task Force. It ensures that Marines are ready to defend U.S. national interests worldwide and can effectively respond to various global conflicts.
