YOKOSUKA—The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Preble (DDG 88) has reached its new home in Yokosuka, Japan, as part of its assignment with Commander, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15 on October 12, 2024.

Previously stationed at Naval Base San Diego for nearly 22 years, the USS Preble was originally commissioned on November 9, 2002, in Boston. “We are thrilled to have Preble join the team in the Western Pacific,” stated Capt. Justin Harts, Commander of Destroyer Squadron 15. “Her arrival is a welcome addition to the DESRON 15 family, and her advanced capabilities add unique value. I am excited to get Preble underway with our Allies and partners to see what she can do.”

The vessel honors Commodore Edward Preble, a notable figure from the American Revolutionary War and one of the Navy’s early leaders. As the 38th destroyer of its class, USS Preble brings significant prowess.

The United States places high value on Japan’s role in maintaining peace, security, and stability across the Indo-Pacific region. Japan’s enduring commitment and hospitality in hosting U.S. forces are vital to the alliance, reinforcing strategic objectives for a free and open Indo-Pacific.

USS Preble now operates under Destroyer Squadron 15, part of the U.S. Navy’s largest forward-deployed surface force within the 7th Fleet, which emphasizes collaboration with allies to ensure regional security.
