LARNACA, CYPRUS – The USS New York (LPD 21), accompanied by the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), Special Operations Capable (SOC), has docked in Larnaca, Cyprus, for a planned port visit as of October 14, 2024. This occasion marks a significant step in fostering relationships between the United States and Cyprus.

Cmdr. David Pagan, executive officer of the USS New York, highlighted the enthusiasm of his crew regarding the local experience. “Our Sailors and Marines are eager to experience the vibrant Cypriot culture, food, and history while continuing to forge and strengthen the ties between the two partners,” said Pagan. The opportunity is seen as an excellent chance to appreciate Cypriot hospitality while enhancing diplomatic connections.

During their time in the region, the USS New York continues to uphold U.S., Allied, and partner interests in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The presence of this integrated Navy-Marine Corps team brings essential flexibility and capability to NAVEUR-NAVAF and the U.S. 6th Fleet, contributing to regional stability and deterring potential aggression.

Initially departing from Norfolk, Virginia, on May 22, the ship is part of an operational deployment within the U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa area of operations. The Wasp Amphibious Ready Group (WSP ARG) features the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1), alongside USS New York and the USS Oak Hill (LSD 51) as key components.

The 24th MEU (SOC) represents a Marine Air-Ground Task Force characterized by its strategic speed and agility, prepared to safeguard U.S. national security interests globally. This task force’s ability to respond dynamically across a range of military conflicts underscores its critical role in modern military operations.
