USS Nantucket: The Reigning Queen of the Seas Set to Make Waves
The Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston was abuzz with anticipation as USS Nantucket was officially commissioned into service. Mayor Michelle Wu praised the crew’s dedication, acknowledging their journey through the Great Lakes to arrive at this historic site. This event was a moment of pride for Boston, allowing the city to send off the ship to its homeport.
The ceremony was graced by several distinguished guests, including Governor Maura Healey, who provided the principal address. Other notable speakers included Polly Spencer, the ship’s sponsor, and U.S. Representative Bill Keating. They were joined by Meredith Berger, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, and Vice Adm. Michael Boyle, among others.
Lockheed Martin’s Vice President, Paul Lemmo, expressed pride in the USS Nantucket, emphasizing its symbolic representation of innovation and resilience. The commissioning imbued the ship with life, a command given by Polly Spencer and her daughters in a ceremonious tradition.
Governor Healey conveyed a heartfelt message to the youth present, hoping to inspire future generations to serve. The USS Nantucket (LCS 27), a Freedom-variant littoral combat ship, now bears the honor of continuing a storied namesake within the naval service.
Constructed by Lockheed Martin and Fincantieri Marinette Marine in Wisconsin, USS Nantucket boasts advanced weaponry, including the Over the Horizon-Weapons System and Naval Strike Missiles. Such capabilities enhance the United States’ maritime defense and coastal operations.
Cmdr. Kari Yakubisin, the ship’s first commanding officer, drew parallels between their mission and that of the USS Constitution in 1812. Highlighting the ship’s role in maintaining open sea lanes and ensuring global maritime peace, she lauded her crew’s tireless efforts over the past months.
The vessel’s agility and mission-focused design enable it to combat threats like mines and submarines, vital for maritime security. Homeported at Naval Station Mayport, Florida, USS Nantucket aims to contribute actively to sea control and deterrence.
