EVERETT, Washington – Returning after an intensive eight-month deployment, the USS John S. McCain (DDG 56), part of the esteemed Arleigh Burke-class of guided-missile destroyers, docked back at Naval Station Everett on October 31, 2024. This deployment was in collaboration with the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG) across the U.S. 3rd, 5th, and 7th Fleet operational zones.

Commander Parina Somnhot, leading the John S. McCain, expressed immense pride in the crew’s unwavering dedication and professionalism. “Our Sailors consistently rose to every challenge, ensuring the mission’s success,” she remarked, highlighting the deployment’s demands.

Structurally, the deployment began in March. The John S. McCain operated both independently and as a collaborative component of the TRCSG. The principal objectives were regional security in the Indo-Pacific, open sea lanes, and reinforcing the United States’ commitment to allies in the region. Following orders, the group was directed to the U.S. Central Command area to enhance military readiness amidst rising tensions in the Middle East.

The USS John S. McCain engaged in multiple drills with international naval forces. These exercises proved vital, fostering partnerships and boosting operational readiness, interoperability, and maritime collaboration.

The Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are renowned for their versatile offensive and defensive roles. Their multi-mission capabilities enable them to function autonomously or integrate seamlessly with larger formations like strike or surface action groups.

The TRCSG is a formidable naval assembly. It includes Carrier Strike Group 9 staff, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 23 staff, and the flagship aircraft carrier, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). Supporting this are guided-missile destroyers such as the USS Daniel Inouye (DDG 118) and the USS Russell (DDG 59), alongside the John S. McCain.

As a pivotal entity of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the 3rd Fleet administers naval operations in the Indo-Pacific. It ensures that forces undergo practical, scenario-based training crucial for comprehensive military duties, from active combat to disaster relief ventures. The collaboration with global allies reinforces navigation freedoms and steadfast regional security.
