In a significant demonstration of naval prowess and cooperation, USS Harpers Ferry returned home after a notable deployment in the Indo-Pacific. This mission emphasized the United States’ dedication to maintaining open and free international waters.

Cmdr. Gabriel Burgi expressed immense pride in the achievements of the ship and its crew. “Our journey involved countless miles away from familiar shores, but the missions we completed were critical to safeguarding maritime freedoms,” Burgi stated. The deployment featured participation in both bilateral and multinational exercises, highlighting the U.S. as a global ambassador.

The deployment marked the operational debut of the Marine Corps’ Amphibious Combat Vehicles (ACVs), a milestone after more than five decades. “The eyes of the world were upon us,” Burgi remarked, underlining the significance of these vehicles in forming future naval strategies.

Departing from San Diego in March, Harpers Ferry’s itinerary included the esteemed Exercise Balikatan 24 with the Philippines, the largest such bilateral exercise. Along the way, the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) engaged in vital training and humanitarian projects.

The ACVs demonstrated their capabilities during live-fire drills in Oyster Bay, a remarkable first for the Marine Corps. “This deployment saw the ACV achieve numerous pioneering feats,” commented Maj. Joe Santos. The Harpers Ferry facilitated groundbreaking certifications and initiatives in amphibious operations.

In the Philippines, collaboration extended to the Amphibious Coastal Defense Continuum, enhancing local defense capabilities in partnership with Philippine forces. The movement north to South Korea for Exercise Ssang Yong 24 further underscored the ACV’s strategic importance, culminating in a historic amphibious assault.

Burgi acknowledged the deployment’s advancements in deploying and maintaining these cutting-edge vehicles. “Each operation expanded our confidence and capabilities,” he noted.

Concluding its seven-month voyage, Harpers Ferry has made strides in naval history, with crew members rightly proud of their accomplishments. “This deployment was a testament to our resilience and skill,” Santos reflected. The mission was a significant chapter in naval operations and one that will be remembered by those involved.
