The USS Hampton has arrived at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, marking a significant step in maintaining naval readiness. Shipyard Commander Capt. Michael Oberdorf underscored the importance of the upcoming maintenance and modernization efforts. “This work extends the operational lifespan of our vital assets and enhances the Navy’s warfighting readiness,” he stated, aligning with the Chief of Naval Operations’ NAVPLAN 2024.

The Hampton, commissioned in 1993, is set to undergo essential system upgrades to boost its competitive edge in maritime operations. These upgrades are expected to ensure that the submarine remains mission-ready. The Hampton, named after four U.S. cities, boasts a commendable deployment history, having completed three Western Pacific deployments supporting national security interests. Recently, it played a crucial role in maritime security operations in the U.S. 7th Fleet area, focusing on deterrence strategies.

Attack submarines like the Hampton are vital for various mission areas, including anti-submarine warfare and special forces deployment. With advanced systems, the Hampton contributes significantly to maritime security and supports special operations forces using Tomahawk cruise missiles in global theaters.

The shipyard welcomes the Hampton with enthusiasm. “Returning the Hampton to the fleet to defend freedom is our top priority,” said Tim Doyon, Hampton Project Superintendent. Cmdr. Grant Wanier, who assumed command on May 30, 2024, will lead the USS Hampton throughout this maintenance period.

During its stay at the shipyard, the Hampton will receive support from the host community of Hampton, New Hampshire. This partnership strengthens ties between the Navy and the community, with crew members participating in local events and projects.

The maintenance and modernization efforts at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard will secure the Hampton’s position as a crucial asset for the Navy. The shipyard, known for its expertise in submarine maintenance, ensures warfighters are prepared when needed.
