USS Daniel Inouye Triumphantly Returns from Debut Deployment

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii—The USS Daniel Inouye (DDG 118), an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, marked a significant milestone by returning to its homeport on October 4 after completing its historic maiden deployment. Embarking from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, the destroyer played a pivotal role in enhancing regional stability and security.

Throughout its nine-month mission within the U.S. 5th and 7th fleet areas, the Daniel Inouye operated under the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG). The primary objectives included deterring aggression, promoting regional stability, and safeguarding commerce routes. Cmdr. Kevin Dore, the commanding officer, emphasized the ship’s dedication to its mission and the crew’s readiness, exemplified by a remarkable rescue operation of two Iranian mariners stranded at sea.

The rescue took place on August 23, 2024, when a rigid-hull inflatable boat from the Daniel Inouye, assisted by a search and rescue helicopter, successfully saved two civilians. The mariners received medical attention aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71).

“Our crew treats every drill like a real-life scenario,” noted Cmdr. Ryan Kelly, the executive officer. The ship operates under the motto “Go For Broke,” an homage to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, driven by a commitment to excellence and resilience.

During port visits, crew members experienced the cultures of South Korea, Singapore, and Thailand. Command Master Chief Simeon Yeboah praised the crew’s resilience and unity, emphasizing the deep connection they share with the ship’s namesake, Daniel Inouye, a decorated World War II veteran and influential politician from Hawaii.

Daniel Inouye’s legacy is profound. Rising to prominence as one of Hawaii’s first congressional representatives, his military valor in World War II earned him the Medal of Honor, among other distinctions. The ship’s namesake reflects a storied past of bravery and public service, serving as inspiration for the crew.

The TRCSG, under Carrier Strike Group Nine (CSG 9), involves a collaborative fleet including the flagship Theodore Roosevelt, Carrier Air Wing 11, and multiple other naval assets. This deployment underscores the U.S. Navy’s commitment to maintaining freedom and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
