The USS Arleigh Burke, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, returned to its homeport in Rota on December 7 after completing a significant four-month patrol. This marks the vessel’s fifth deployment since relocating its base to Spain.

The deployment began on August 15, with Arleigh Burke setting out to bolster regional alliances and uphold U.S. national security interests in Europe and Africa. The ship’s journey commenced as it navigated eastward through the Strait of Gibraltar.

Commander Tyrchra Bowman expressed pride in the crew’s dedication, stating, “Arleigh Burke Sailors continuously amaze me with their hard work and dedication, no matter the challenges thrown their way. I could not have asked for a better crew, and I am immensely grateful for having the opportunity to command America’s Lead Destroyer.”

During its patrol, the Arleigh Burke achieved significant milestones, such as engaging in deterrence operations in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and completing various weapon system qualifications. The ship also celebrated the promotion of eight new Chief Petty Officers and hosted a visit from Italian Navy Rear Admiral Andrea Petroni, including an exchange with the crew of the Italian frigate Luigi Rizzo. Additionally, the vessel conducted seven underway replenishments, 11 flight quarters, and 14 small boat operations.

The patrol concluded with the Arleigh Burke joining the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group as the Air and Missile Defense Commander during their transit to the Mediterranean Sea. The ship traveled 22,450 miles over 115 days before finally returning to the welcoming arms of friends, family, and USO volunteers in Rota on December 7, 2024.

The U.S. Sixth Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, plays a crucial role in conducting a wide range of joint and naval operations. These operations are often in collaboration with Allied and interagency partners to promote security and stability across Europe and Africa, aligning with U.S. national interests.
