In a strategic display of naval collaboration, the U.S. Navy’s USS Dewey (DDG 105) and the Royal Australian Navy’s HMAS Stuart (FFH 153) participated in the high-stakes exercise Malabar 2024 earlier this October. The maneuvers between the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer and the Anzac-class frigate emphasize growing interoperability between the two nations’ navies.

Vice Adm. Fred Kacher, commander of the U.S. 7th Fleet, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, stating, “This exercise further builds on our existing interoperability and combined readiness we have with the Royal Australian Navy. Every time we operate together, we strengthen our capabilities and shared commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

Throughout the four-day operation, both vessels engaged in complex naval drills such as formation sailing, air defense exercises, and intricate maritime communication trainings. These activities were complemented by personnel exchanges and boarding practice drills, reflecting the diverse array of naval capabilities showcased during the exercise.

Cmdr. Warren Bechly, commanding officer of HMAS Stuart, praised the joint engagement: “Conducting a joint sail with USS Dewey has been of great value, with multiple different activities conducted between the ships, including personnel exchange, boarding practices, manoeuvring in close company, and warfare drills. Whether it is large-scale exercises or ships in transit between the same ports, working with our allies and partners is always a valuable opportunity to build closer ties and enhance interoperability.”

The exercise underscores the commitment of the U.S. and Australian navies to uphold international maritime order in the Indo-Pacific. Bilateral operations like these not only enhance tactical interoperability but also strengthen political and military alliances in a region marked by increasing maritime complexities.

USS Dewey, an integral component of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15, asserts its advanced position as part of the U.S. 7th Fleet, the Navy’s largest forward-deployed fleet. These operations reaffirm the fleet’s vital role in maintaining stability and freedom in the Indo-Pacific region.
