MEDITERRANEAN SEA – Nestled aboard the USS Wasp (LHD 1), within the heart of its operations, the Tactical Air Control Center (TACC) orchestrates crucial airspace planning for the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group (WSP ARG)-24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Special Operations Capable (SOC).

Manned by Tactical Air Control Squadron (TACRON) 22 from Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, VA, the TACC is a melting pot of air traffic controllers, operation specialists, and intelligence personnel. Divided into distinct sections, it manages air traffic, coordinates aviation support, and handles essential logistics like passenger and cargo transport. Each segment functions in symphony to ensure seamless expeditionary air operations.

Air Traffic Controllers (ACs) oversee aircraft as they proceed on missions, harmonizing with the ship’s controllers for cohesive airspace management. “We provide tactical control beyond the horizon,” noted a second-class air traffic controller, emphasizing the center’s pivotal role.

U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Laura Hanes leads the Air Support Control Section, interfacing with ground forces and responding to dynamic mission needs. “I bring aircraft expertise into ground operations,” she remarked, underlining their integrated approach.

Although one of the smallest, the Passenger, Mail, and Cargo section plays a critical logistical role. “We ensure material transport across the ARG,” explained Lt. Victoria Hurd, which involves orchestrating vast movements of supplies and personnel for maritime operations.

The Plans Team, focused on planning future air missions, develops the “Hot Sheet,” a daily directive identifying airspace constraints. “Being a resource for airspace queries is rewarding,” said Air Traffic Controller William Stone.

Operation Specialists man the Air Defense Coordination Section, ensuring robust air defense while scanning and identifying all aircraft in the vicinity. “We execute the defense commander’s plan,” stated an operator involved in air warfare operations.

The TACC acts as the linchpin for air operations within the Amphibious Task Force, with TACRON 22 sections central to its functionality. The squadron’s reach extends beyond basic tasking, offering temporary air traffic control solutions for Marine operations and disaster relief.

USS Wasp’s scheduled deployment to the U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa operations, spearheading the WSPARG, underpins efforts to sustain regional stability and deter aggression in key areas, including the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

The WSP ARG comprises several ships and the 24th MEU, a highly deployable Marine Air-Ground Task Force with critical landing and logistics capabilities. Each element contributes to a powerful maritime and air response team, flexible and ready for global challenges.
