The USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (HSTCSG) arrives at Crete for essential maintenance and cultural immersion. The port visit prioritizes the upkeep of ships and aircraft, while offering sailors a chance to explore Crete’s rich history.

“I’m incredibly proud of the dedication and service of this team,” expressed Capt. Dave Snowden of USS Harry S. Truman, recognizing their unyielding commitment to maintaining operational readiness and combat support capabilities.

Following its entry into the U.S. Central Command zone on December 14, the group executed multiple self-defense strikes in Houthi-controlled regions of Yemen. These operations aligned with CENTCOM’s strategy to hinder threats against regional partners and secure commerce. Additionally, on February 1, HSTCSG targeted ISIS-Somalia under the directive of U.S. Africa Command.

Rear Adm. Sean Bailey, HSTCSG commander, emphasized the significance of the port visit. “This pause allows us to focus on essential maintenance, ensuring maximum readiness for impending operations,” he stated.

The Crete stop marks the third in HSTCSG’s deployment, having previously visited Oslo, Norway, and Marseille, France. NSA Souda Bay serves as a crucial outpost for projecting power and enhancing warfighting prowess in the Eastern Mediterranean.

“Team Souda is thrilled to welcome HSTCSG,” remarked Capt. Stephen Steacy of NSA Souda Bay. The strategic position in the Eastern Mediterranean, coupled with unmatched local hospitality, offers sailors a well-deserved respite.

Earlier, in April 2024, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (IKECSG) also made a similar visit to the site. Both groups have engaged in intense combat operations unparalleled since World War II.

The HSTCSG includes the flagship USS Harry S. Truman, Carrier Air Wing 1, and key naval forces, emphasizing its mission for steadfast combat operations and regional presence through sea control.
