Capt. John Barrientos officially took over command of Task Force (TF) 59, relieving Capt. Colin Corridan who led the unit since March 2023.

TF 59 is tasked with integrating unmanned systems and artificial intelligence within maritime operations across the U.S. 5th Fleet’s extensive area of responsibilities. Under Corridan’s command, the task force engaged in over 30 missions, including the U.S. Navy’s inaugural unmanned transit through the strategic Strait of Hormuz and the adaptation of commercial unmanned aerial vehicles for military purposes.

Vice Adm. George Wikoff, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and the U.S. 5th Fleet, commended Corridan. “Your tour here has been nothing short of exceptional,” Wikoff stated. “You moved us from theoretical concepts to actionable solutions, acting as the critical link between industry, naval leadership, technology, and our regional partners.”

In January 2024, Corridan initiated Task Group 59.1 within TF 59, providing a dedicated focus on unmanned operations alongside traditional manned missions to strengthen maritime security across the Middle East. This new group ensured seamless integration of advanced technologies.

Reflecting on his tenure, Corridan expressed his admiration for his team. “Working with this diverse and skilled group was incredibly rewarding,” Corridan said. “Their different perspectives and talents made our team exceptionally strong.”

Corridan will now transition to the Disruptive Capabilities Office in Washington, D.C.

Barrientos assumes leadership of TF 59 after completing a fellowship with the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. This marks his third tour in the U.S. 5th Fleet arena.

“Leveraging cutting-edge technology to enhance maritime domain awareness and deter malign actors is pivotal,” Barrientos noted. “This region, with its unique geography and strategic importance, is the perfect setting for our operations. I look forward to shaping the future with this dedicated team.”

The U.S. 5th Fleet’s area of operations covers approximately 2.5 million square miles, including the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea, key parts of the Indian Ocean, and vital maritime choke points such as the Strait of Hormuz, Suez Canal, and Strait of Bab al-Mandeb.
