SECNAV Honors Legendary Hero: Robert Kerrey’s Legacy Immortalized in New Guided Missile Destroyer DDG 146
WASHINGTON – Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro has officially named the Navy’s newest Arleigh Burke-class Guided Missile Destroyer as the future USS Robert Kerrey (DDG 146). This vessel will be the first to honor former U.S. Senator, Nebraska Governor, and naval officer Joseph Robert Kerrey.
Del Toro expressed his honor at being able to name the ship after Kerrey, underscoring the former senator’s heroic actions during the Vietnam War and his dedication to public service. Kerrey, born in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1943, joined the Navy in 1966. As a SEAL officer, he displayed remarkable valor in a 1969 mission in Nha Trang, Vietnam, a feat that earned him the Medal of Honor the following year.
The naming was announced at a press conference at the Intrepid Museum in New York City, where Del Toro personally shared the news with Kerrey. Visibly moved by the recognition, Kerrey thanked President Biden, Secretary Del Toro, and the Navy for this honor.
In addition to his military accolades, Kerrey served as the 35th Governor of Nebraska and as a U.S. Senator from 1989 to 2001. He was also a member of the 9/11 Commission, further demonstrating his lifelong commitment to public service.
The USS Robert Kerrey will be a part of the Arleigh Burke-class, ships known for their advanced technology and versatility. Equipped with the Aegis Combat System, these destroyers play a crucial role in national defense, capable of multi-mission operations and providing robust security measures globally.
