The Historic Decatur House in Washington, D.C., recently hosted a significant event led by the White House Historical Association (WHHA), spotlighting the remarkable contributions of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Distinguished guests, including some descendants of Commodore Stephen Decatur and former Secretary of the Navy John Dalton, gathered for this occasion.

Tributes were paid to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. A reflection on his enduring inspiration to the Navy and Marine Corps highlighted the day’s programming, following a memorial service in his honor.

Secretary Del Toro delivered the keynote address, focusing on the storied history of the Navy and Marine Corps. He highlighted how these forces have been essential in safeguarding American values for nearly 250 years, from historic battles to modern-day conflicts.

“This year marks 250 years of unparalleled service,” Del Toro proclaimed. “Our Sailors and Marines have continually answered the call to defend liberty, demonstrating unparalleled bravery across the globe.” His speech honored former President Carter, lauding him as a naval officer who personified resilience and integrity.

“President Carter’s legacy is one of honorable service,” Del Toro remarked. He emphasized Carter’s resilience and dedication as qualities that continue to inspire current service members.

Del Toro stressed the importance of maintaining the high standards exemplified by figures like Carter and Commodore Decatur in the future success of the Navy and Marine Corps. “Our present and future success depends on building upon the legacy of excellence left by our predecessors,” he stated.

As the military branches anticipate their 250th anniversary in 2025, Del Toro concluded with an optimistic message. “Our service members embody the highest ideals of honor, courage, and commitment. Together, we will continue defending our nation’s values while honoring the legacy of those who served before us.”

The event wrapped up with a heartfelt tribute to all who have served in the Navy and Marine Corps, underscoring the enduring courage and resolve that these forces have demonstrated throughout their history.
