SECNAV Del Toro Engages Officer Candidates and Surface Warriors in Newport
NEWPORT, Rhode Island – Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro visited Newport, R.I., on August 8, engaging with Officer Candidates and Surface Warfare Officers.
Addressing officer candidates at Officer Training Command Newport and future division officers at Surface Warfare Schools Command, Del Toro emphasized his gratitude for their commitment to serve and encouraged them to share their experiences with their communities.
“I need you to be leaders when you get out to the fleet,” Del Toro stated. “Leaders of our young men and women in uniform. But I also need you to recruit our next generation of Sailors. We need people who will think strategically about the hard issues—issues like how we win the war for talent we find ourselves in.”
Del Toro also reflected on the priorities he set during his tenure.
“When I became Secretary of the Navy, I outlined three enduring priorities for the Department,” Del Toro said. “First is strengthening our maritime dominance—ensuring you have the equipment needed for mission success. Second is building a culture of warfighting excellence—investing in your education, quality of life, and eradicating discrimination, racism, or extremism in our ranks. Third is enhancing strategic partnerships—fostering strong relationships with our global allies, industry partners, and Congress.”
Additionally, Secretary Del Toro met with senior area leaders during his visit to Newport.
