The U.S. Navy recently concluded a comprehensive five-day drill designed to reinforce its strategic oil spill response capabilities at NSA Bahrain. The exercise, initiated by the Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV), tested various levels of oil spill management proficiency, demonstrating both Tier II and III response readiness from the Emergency Ship Salvage Material (ESSM) base.

SUPSALV, under NAVSEA contracts, plays a critical role by supplying equipment and expertise for offshore spill responses. Engaging with the National Preparedness for Response Exercise Program (NPREP), the drill fulfilled federally mandated training protocols. This participation was part of a strategic obligation to deploy spill response equipment within designated regions, ensuring operational readiness and compliance with environmental safeguards.

Johnson Pereira, acting director of NAVFAC EURAFCENT’s environmental division, underscored the potential severity of oil spills if not meticulously planned for. “Readiness and adeptness in managing oil spill incidents are crucial for mitigating environmental damage,” Pereira emphasized. He highlighted the importance of fostering collaboration with host-nation partners to enhance response capabilities.

Robert McClellan, leading the SUPSALV team, orchestrated simulations that spanned the gamut from containment to health and safety oversight. He noted the invaluable insights gained through field deployment, which identifies maintenance issues and builds coordination with response partners, both local and international.

The event garnered participation from several Bahrain-based agencies including Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) and the Royal Bahraini Naval Force. Attendees experienced hands-on demonstrations of the SK0050 high-speed current buster and associated equipment. These exercises provided an essential platform for assessing collective readiness and refining strategies to protect marine environments and public health.

Capt. Zachariah Aperauch of NSA Bahrain remarked on the importance of such rigorous training, stressing that preparedness for environmental contingencies ensures resilience against potential threats. “High standard training and open communication with our partners propel us towards achieving our readiness objectives,” he stated.

NSA Bahrain’s broader mission involves securing U.S. 5th Fleet maritime operations, ensuring the safety of ships, aircraft, and personnel through committed and courageous service.
