Sailor morale, a vital aspect of mission efficiency, becomes even more crucial during the holiday season. This time of year, the culinary creations of Culinary Specialists (CSs) foster a sense of familiarity that uplifts spirits, offering a chance for Sailors to rejuvenate collectively.

“Thanksgiving holds various meanings for our Sailors,” said CS2 Daviontee Robinson. “It’s a period of gratitude, appreciation, and unity.”

Feeding a ship’s crew is a daunting task at any time, but the holidays amplify this challenge dramatically.

This year, it is anticipated that Navy Culinary Specialists will prepare 44,815 pounds of roast turkey, 11,457 pounds of mashed potatoes, 5,654 pounds of stuffing, 21,906 pounds of sweet potatoes, 6,630 pounds of green bean casserole, 4,606 pounds of cranberry sauce, 11,960 gallons of gravy, and 23,678 assorted pies for Sailors across the fleet.

“Serving the Thanksgiving meal in Navy galleys worldwide, whether afloat or ashore, stands as one of the major events of the year for food service teams,” expressed Navy Food Service Director Cmdr. Brian Bieber. “It is a chance to offer Sailors the comfort of home, even when they might be deployed, on duty, or distant from family.”

While Thanksgiving invites us to reflect and express gratitude, Sailors remain steadfast in their mission focus.

“During deployment, a well-prepared meal enhances morale and camaraderie among all onboard,” Robinson noted. “Although our primary attention is on the mission, our hearts stay connected to our families.”
