George Washington Makes Spectacular Return to Yokosuka
The USS George Washington, now a key component of the forward-deployed naval forces in Japan, makes its historic return to Yokosuka. This deployment marks the second time the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has been stationed here, having first arrived in 2008 before being succeeded by the USS Ronald Reagan in 2015.
“A U.S. carrier signifies our most advanced maritime capability,” remarked Vice Adm. Fred Kacher, Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet. “The George Washington arrives with modernized technology, underscoring our commitment to deterrence and security in this region.”
The ship navigated from Norfolk, Virginia to Japan, including a vital stop for Exercise Southern Seas in the U.S. 4th Fleet and a comprehensive seven-week transit from San Diego.
Captain Tim Waits expressed immense pride in the crew’s efforts. “From our departure in Virginia in April, reaching Yokosuka has been a pivotal milestone. Our crew has consistently exceeded expectations, proving ready from day one in the 7th Fleet’s operational area.”
Recently, the George Washington, alongside Carrier Air Wing 5, engaged in the Freedom Edge exercise with Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force and the Republic of Korea Navy in the East China Sea. Notably, it included the first F-35C Lightning II squadron, adding significant capability to the aircraft roster.
“We’re thrilled to return to Yokosuka,” stated Rear Adm. Greg Newkirk, Commander, Task Force 70. “Our community comprises returning friends and newcomers eager to forge relationships and foster a shared vision of peace across the region.”
The carrier recently hosted U.S. and Japanese dignitaries at sea, including U.S. Ambassador Rahm Emanuel and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs OKANO Masataka, further emphasizing its diplomatic role.
Carrier Air Wing 5 operates a diverse fleet, from F/A-18 Super Hornets to the F-35C, functioning as a critical component of the U.S. Navy’s strategic presence in the Indo-Pacific region. As 7th Fleet’s premiere forward-deployed carrier, George Washington embodies America’s ongoing dedication to a stable and open maritime domain in collaboration with regional allies.
