Future USS Nantucket (LCS 27) Set for Grand Commissioning, Navy Announces

The U.S. Navy is set to commission the future USS Nantucket (LCS 27), a Freedom-variant littoral combat ship, on November 16, 2024, at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, Massachusetts.

The naming of LCS 27 honors the rich heritage and maritime legacy of the people of Nantucket. Polly Spencer, the wife of the 76th Secretary of the Navy, will sponsor the ship. She will carry out the Navy tradition of giving the order to “man our ship and bring her to life!” as part of the commissioning ceremony. The crew will hoist the commissioning pennant, officially inducting Nantucket into the fleet.

Nantucket will become the 14th Freedom-variant littoral combat ship and the fourth vessel to bear this historic name. Post-commissioning, it will set sail for its new assignment at Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Florida.

The USS Nantucket is designed as a fast, optimally manned, mission-specific surface combatant. It is capable of operating in both near-shore and open-ocean environments to address 21st-century coastal threats. Littoral combat ships like Nantucket integrate with joint, combined, manned, and unmanned teams to support forward presence, maritime security, sea control, and deterrence efforts globally.

The mission of Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, is to man, train, and equip the Surface Force to provide fleet commanders with credible naval power capable of controlling the sea and projecting power ashore.
