Future Nuclear-Powered Submarine USS Atlanta (SSN 813) Unveiled by SECNAV Del Toro

ATLANTA (Oct 23, 2024) – A commemorative event marked the announcement by Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro naming the future Virginia-class Nuclear-Powered Attack Submarine SSN 813 as the USS Atlanta. The ceremony took place at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum.

The USS Atlanta pays tribute to the city’s rich naval history and honors the five preceding navy vessels bearing the same name. This submarine continues the tradition of naming such vessels after American cities, following other recent designations like USS Long Island and USS San Francisco.

Del Toro highlighted Atlanta’s enduring relationship with the Navy. The city, since its early days, has stood by the nation’s military efforts, a legacy encapsulated by figures such as President Jimmy Carter. “Today, we restore the Atlanta name with pride,” Del Toro stated.

Congresswoman Nikema Williams attended the ceremony, emphasizing Atlanta’s role in civil rights history. “The USS Atlanta will symbolize our city’s spirit and dedication to the fight for justice,” she said, linking the submarine’s mission with Atlanta’s historical values.

Mayor Andre Dickens added to the sentiment, saying, “This vessel embodies Atlanta’s courage and strength.” Former Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms was introduced as the ship’s sponsor, a key role fostering connections between the ship, its crew, and the nation.

Del Toro expressed gratitude for Bottoms’ acceptance of the role, noting her dedication to serving the community and the nation. Atlanta, with its storied history since 1836, has been a nexus for industry and transportation and had significant military ties with former Naval Air Station Atlanta.

The legacy of the USS Atlanta name stretches over multiple vessels, from a screw gunboat in 1858 to a fast attack submarine that served until 1999. Attack submarines like the USS Atlanta are integral in multiple naval operations, from enemy engagement to reconnaissance missions.
