The multinational maritime exercise, Phoenix Express, sponsored by U.S. Africa Command and conducted by the U.S. 6th Fleet, has commenced in the Southern Mediterranean Sea. This exercise unites maritime forces from North Africa, Europe, and the United States to refine their cooperation and expertise in maritime security operations.

Now in its 19th year, Phoenix Express is a 10-day event aimed at bolstering regional collaboration and enhancing awareness of the maritime domain. It focuses on improving information-sharing practices and tactical interdiction skills to tackle sea-based illicit activities effectively.

Rear Admiral Jason Naidyhorski of the U.S. 6th Fleet praised the participants’ skills, noting the exercise’s role in strengthening partnerships across Europe and Africa. “The training evolves each year,” Naidyhorski stated, emphasizing the continuous improvement and adaptation of tactics.

Phoenix Express includes both land-based and sea-based activities, utilizing maritime operations centers and a multinational coordination center. These facilities are designed to enhance information-sharing among allies, alongside exercises such as ship-boarding and search-and-rescue drills. These components aim to foster cooperation and refine maritime safety and security strategies.

U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia, Joey Hood, highlighted the longstanding partnership between the United States and Tunisia. He acknowledged Tunisia’s leadership in combating illicit maritime activities and expressed gratitude for the chance to collaborate closely during the exercise.

This year features the innovative use of unmanned systems by U.S. 6th Fleet, working with African partners to deter illegal activities within African exclusive economic zones. This advancement underscores the exercise’s commitment to staying at the forefront of maritime security technology.

Nations participating in Phoenix Express include Algeria, Belgium, Georgia, Italy, Libya, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia, Türkiye, Senegal, and the United States. The exercise forms part of a broader strategy by U.S. Naval Forces Africa to address security challenges through regional collaborations.

With its headquarters in Naples, Italy, U.S. Sixth Fleet undertakes joint and naval operations, often in partnership with allies, to bolster security and advance U.S. interests in Europe and Africa.
