Adm. Stuart Munsch, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa (NAVEUR-NAVAF) and Allied Joint Forces Command Naples, led a notable ceremony recently. He highlighted Vice Adm. Thomas Ishee’s significant contributions as 6th Fleet commander.

“You commanded thousands of Sailors from multiple nations, effectively overseeing numerous ships, submarines, and aircraft, advancing our warfighting edge consistently,” Munsch stated. “Your teams have built combat power, strengthened ties with allies, honed our readiness, and pushed the limits of new technologies.”

During his tenure, Vice Adm. Ishee oversaw a wide range of naval and joint operations spanning two continents. The fleet effectively deployed ready forces in the Black Sea and other areas, demonstrating its capability for any contingency. It has been the maritime partner of choice in Europe and Africa, providing crucial humanitarian support during significant events, including aiding Turkish earthquake victims in 2023.

Ishee also established Joint Task Force 406, EUCOM’s maritime crisis response and contingency command. This unit maintains mission readiness, fosters relationships with allies, safeguards U.S. interests, and deters adversaries in Europe.

“The U.S. 6th Fleet stands as a capable force, projecting power across the maritime domain,” Ishee affirmed. “The fleet and STRIKFORNATO remain as lethal and professional as ever.”

Vice Adm. Eugene Anderson, the new commander and former Director of Operations for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, expressed gratitude towards his new team. He shared his vision and goals for the command.

“The challenges facing this region will test us daily,” Anderson noted. “We will rely on our alliances and partnerships to remain the most capable maritime force in the theater, meeting every challenge with strength and confidence to enhance regional security.”

U.S. Sixth Fleet, based in Naples, Italy, executes a broad spectrum of joint and naval operations to advance security and stability across Europe and Africa, often collaborating with allies.
