Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and Italian ITS Cavour CSG Join Forces for Unprecedented Dual Deck Operations

The recent maritime exercise between U.S. and Italian naval forces offered a crucial platform for joint operations. More than 7,500 Sailors and Marines from both nations engaged in an array of coordinated activities. They executed integrated planning, communications, and leadership exchanges designed to enhance maritime operations and combat readiness.

Rear Adm. Adan Cruz, commander of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 3, emphasized the importance of such exercises. “Collaborating with our Cavour CSG counterparts underscores our strategic advantage in maintaining strong alliances,” he stated. This exercise marks the second such collaboration in their deployment, strengthening operational capacity across international waters.

Rear Adm. Giancarlo Ciappina, commander of the Cavour Carrier Strike Group, extended his hospitality to Cruz during the event. “Working alongside the Lincoln Carrier Strike Group once more is invaluable,” Ciappina noted. “It enhances our ability to maintain global naval operations wherever needed to secure maritime communication lines.”

This exercise was the second in a series of joint drills between the two navies in 2024, following an inaugural engagement in the Indo-Pacific. The collaboration involved several key vessels, including the USS Abraham Lincoln and the Italian aircraft carrier ITS Cavour, among others.

A variety of aircraft participated, featuring models such as the F/A-18E Super Hornets and F-35B Lightning II from both naval groups. These exercises included joint live-fire drills and air defense operations, reflecting the advanced interoperability sought by both forces.

Prior to the exercise, Cruz and Ciappina conducted a readiness assessment via virtual teleconference. This led to strategic personnel exchanges and critical tactical drills. The training concluded with a sophisticated air defense exercise that involved both tactical aircraft groups.

Cruz expressed his gratitude for the collaboration, stating, “It’s an honor to operate alongside our NATO Allies.” Ciappina reciprocated, appreciating the professionalism and shared commitment to sustaining peace and stability.
