USS Oak Hill Arrives in Cyprus for Strategic Engagements

LARNACA, Cyprus – The USS Oak Hill (LSD 51), part of the Harpers Ferry-class amphibious landing dock ships, docked in Larnaca, Cyprus, on October 17, 2024. This visit is part of its mission with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Special Operations Capable (SOC).

Commander Beth-Ann Martin, the executive officer of Oak Hill, emphasized the importance of the visit. “This port visit enables us to conduct training with the Republic of Cyprus and provides downtime for the crew,” she stated. Such visits are crucial for fostering relationships with international partners.

During their stay, Marines from the 24th MEU (SOC) will engage in training exercises with the Republic of Cyprus National Guard. This collaboration aims to enhance operational readiness and strengthen defense ties. Additionally, service members have the opportunity to explore Larnaca and its surroundings, enriching cultural exchanges.

Oak Hill’s deployment occurs under the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group (WSP ARG)-24th MEU (SOC), operating within the U.S. 6th Fleet and U.S. Naval Forces Europe-U.S. Naval Forces Africa territories. These operations support U.S., Allied, and partner interests in the Eastern Mediterranean, promoting regional stability and deterring potential threats.

The WSP ARG-24th MEU (SOC) comprises the flagship USS Wasp (LHD 1), USS New York (LPD 21), Oak Hill, and their embarked MEU. The 24th MEU (SOC) itself is a diverse Marine Air-Ground Task Force, integrating units such as the Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 365 and Combat Logistics Battalion 24.
