USS Wasp (LHD 1) Arrives in Limassol, Cyprus for Mid-Deployment Voyage Repair

LIMASSOL, Cyprus – After six months of extensive operations at sea, the USS Wasp (LHD 1), a formidable amphibious assault ship, alongside the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), has anchored in Limassol, Cyprus. The mid-deployment voyage repair (MDVR) marks an essential phase in ensuring the vessel’s operational efficiency.

The MDVR is pivotal for executing necessary maintenance tasks unfeasible at sea. “Limassol offers a crucial interval to perform large-scale maintenance. This ensures Wasp’s readiness to safeguard our national interests,” stated Capt. Chris “Chewie” Purcell, commanding officer of USS Wasp. Such overseas operations also signify strong collaborations with allies, amplifying the capacity of the ship’s maintenance teams.

While docked, Wasp’s crew will engage in community and military activities designed to bolster alliances and foster local relations. Noteworthy is their participation in a multinational soccer tournament initiated by the Royal Air Force and volunteer work at the Logos School of English Education.

Significantly, the Marines will conduct bilateral training exercises with the Cypriot National Guard. These exercises, stationed in Paphos and Larnaca, underscore the shared commitment to maintaining readiness and strengthening defense capabilities.

Operating in the 6th Fleet zone, the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group (WSP ARG)-24th MEU contributes to maritime security and stability, representing a cohesive effort to defend U.S. and ally interests. This group includes the USS New York, USS Oak Hill, and the 24th MEU, structured as a Marine Air-Ground Task Force.
