U.S. Navy Honors Legacy Following President Jimmy Carter’s Passing

In a heartfelt address, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro expressed profound condolences to the Carter family, acknowledging the passing of a venerable public servant and devoted American, President Jimmy Carter. Del Toro underscored Carter’s indelible dedication to public service, tracing his journey from a U.S. Navy officer to the 39th President of the United States, and his enduring philanthropic efforts.

The submarine SSN-813 was recently named the USS Atlanta, a tribute announced at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum. This decision honors Carter’s legacy, enriched by the Seawolf-class submarine USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23) and the institution bearing his name at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. Each of these landmarks symbolizes Carter’s lifelong commitment to bettering society.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti also commemorated Carter, describing him as a figure whose life was defined by courage, compassion, and a resolute moral compass. She highlighted his beginnings on a Georgian peanut farm, his Naval service, and the principles he carried throughout his life as evidence of his unwavering commitment to influencing significant human events.
