SECNAV Del Toro Introduces New Navy Expeditionary Medal for U.S. Fifth Fleet Triumph
WASHINGTON – In a significant recognition of outstanding military effort, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro honored the U.S. Fifth Fleet with the Navy Expeditionary Medal on January 14. This accolade underscores the fleet’s exceptional leadership and achievements under Operation Unified Takedown, conducted from October 1, 2021, to September 30, 2024.
Operation Unified Takedown is a strategic initiative aimed at dismantling smuggling networks that fuel extremism and facilitate the distribution of illegal substances. Over three years, the operation led to the confiscation of over 70 tons of explosive propellant, 1,400 weapons, 226,000 rounds of ammunition, and 43,000 kilograms of narcotics. These operations critically hindered terrorist supply routes, enhanced regional security, and curtailed illegal global trade.
Secretary Del Toro praised the U.S. Fifth Fleet’s members, stating, “The Sailors and Marines have set an extraordinary standard of excellence and perseverance. Their success has not only enhanced maritime security but also strengthened global partnerships and fostered long-term regional stability.”
Commander of the U.S. Fifth Fleet, Vice Adm. George Wikoff, also acknowledged the fleet’s achievements with pride. “This recognition reflects the relentless commitment, courage, and professionalism of our Sailors and Marines,” he remarked, highlighting the critical team efforts and coalition partnerships that played a pivotal role in their mission’s success.
The award commends the fleet’s innovative deployment of resources, including the use of advanced unmanned systems, robust intelligence sharing, and seamless integration with coalition allies.
Secretary Del Toro emphasized the broader implications, saying, “This operation showcases how innovation and collaboration can drive success in addressing complex maritime challenges. The men and women of COMFIFTHFLT exemplify the Navy’s commitment to protecting our national interests and those of our allies.”
The Navy Expeditionary Medal celebrates the unparalleled contributions and resilience demonstrated by COMFIFTHFLT’s personnel. Their relentless efforts have not only disrupted illicit networks but also saved lives and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
This announcement comes in the wake of Secretary Del Toro’s visits to U.S. Naval units in Manama, Bahrain, and Rota, Spain, which are now eligible for the prestigious award.
