Navy Closure Task Force Shares Progress at Red Hill

Navy Undertakes Comprehensive Decommissioning Measures at Red Hill Facility

The Navy has initiated pressure washing operations for tanks 7 and 8 at the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility (RHBFSF). This process, overseen by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH), utilizes a solution of 3% Simple Green and 97% water. Post-cleaning procedures include rigorous inspections to ensure compliance before tank decommissioning.

Further preparations are in place for degassing tanks 3 and 4, marking them as the latest in a series of ventilation measures commenced earlier this year. Air Quality Monitoring updates, relayed via the Navy’s mobile app, confirm VOC levels remain significantly lower than DOH’s safety thresholds.

A recent meeting, hosted by the Navy, brought together stakeholders from various environmental and health agencies to discuss advancements and collaborative efforts in monitoring drinking water safety. This signifies a continued commitment to transparent and cooperative endeavors.

NCTF-RH’s readiness for potential environmental hazards was exemplified through recent spill response exercises under the National Incident Management System protocols, ensuring readiness for spill events.

The “Let’s Talk Red Hill” podcast series, led by Deputy Commander Rear Adm. Marc Williams, continues to deliver updates on the RHBFSF closure. Episodes provide expert insights into processes crucial to safe and strategic decommissioning efforts.

Looking ahead, NCTF-RH will hold an open house on March 12, 2025, spotlighting achievements over the past year and sharing future plans. The event serves as part of the Navy’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and transparency.

Recent engagements highlight NCTF-RH’s active participation in community and governmental meetings, underscoring efforts to ensure environmental safety and public health at Red Hill and beyond. Deputy Commander Williams’ discussions with local officials underscore a collaborative approach to environmental assessments and water initiatives.

For further information, the Navy encourages stakeholders to engage through dedicated platforms, ensuring public access to detailed updates and community interactions concerning the RHBFSF project.
