NAS Oceana personnel keep master jet base mission-ready during record snowfall

NAS Oceana has managed to maintain operational readiness despite severe winter conditions, according to Capt. Josh Appezzato, the base’s Commanding Officer. The base faced an unprecedented snowfall of nearly a foot, marking a historic weather event in Virginia Beach, yet the base’s essential functions continued seamlessly.

Security remains a priority. Security forces ensured uninterrupted gate operations, while keeping facilities secure under challenging circumstances. “Our security team is diligent, maintaining round-the-clock readiness to facilitate safe access for mission-essential personnel,” stated Lt. Kari Wood, NAS Oceana’s Security Officer.

Public works crews have been tirelessly clearing the airfield and primary roadways, facilitating access to NAS Oceana and Dam Neck Annex. “Nonstop efforts target critical routes, allowing safe passage while respecting the workspace of our crews,” remarked Cmdr. Matthew Milkowski of the Public Works department.

Air operations personnel are on high alert, monitoring conditions to ensure aircraft safety. Dean Dawes, the Airfield Manager, emphasized the ongoing efforts to prepare runways by removing snow and observing weather changes, ensuring minimal disruption to flight operations.

Culinary specialists also play a vital role, providing hot meals to the personnel. “Our mission is to sustain the essential workforce, regardless of the weather,” explained Bernice Williamson, the food service officer at Dam Neck Galley. Nourishing meals are crucial for those maintaining the base’s operational status.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported the snowfall broke records dating back to 1980. This didn’t halt NAS Oceana’s functions, thanks to robust preparation, teamwork, and professionalism. “Keeping the Navy’s master jet base operational in adverse conditions is a challenge, executed flawlessly by our dedicated team,” concluded Appezzato, underscoring the personnel’s exceptional commitment and expertise.
