Groundbreaking Ceremony Launches Construction of Nuclear Regional Maintenance Facility at Kings Bay

A significant development marks the U.S. Navy’s commitment to advancing its strategic capabilities. A groundbreaking event at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay signals the start of constructing a Nuclear Regional Maintenance (NRM) facility. This ceremony gathered Navy leaders, local officials, and project stakeholders.

According to Capt. Miguel Dieguez, NAVFAC Southeast commanding officer, the new facility is a pivotal addition to the fleet. “Our work aims to enhance operational readiness,” Capt. Dieguez stated. He emphasized the facility’s role in maintaining the submarine force’s preparedness, consolidating resources, and fostering improved collaboration.

The NRM facility is crucial to the Atlantic Fleet’s ballistic missile submarine readiness. It offers intermediate-level repairs and maintenance. Its construction will allow swift 28-day overhauls and comprehensive 270-day major maintenance periods. Currently, operations are fragmented across temporary installations at Kings Bay. The modern facility will integrate essential functions into one streamlined location, enhancing engineer and mechanic cooperation.

Brian Logan, deputy director of the Naval Regional Maintenance Department at Kings Bay, remarked on the efforts leading to the groundbreaking. He described it as a collaborative journey resulting in a significant milestone. The project, valued at $136 million, was awarded to BL Harbert International in December 2023. Jeremy Pipkin, the senior vice president at the construction firm, expressed gratitude for contributing to such a vital endeavor.

Comprising nuclear repair shops, applied instruction spaces, and employee facilities, the new building will serve a crucial role upon its completion by December 2028. BL Harbert International’s design and construction efforts reflect the facility’s strategic importance. This initiative reinforces the Navy’s dedication to maintaining advanced infrastructure for its fleet.

NAVFAC Southeast operates under a broad jurisdiction, handling numerous functions from planning to real estate management for various military branches across the southeastern United States. As this project progresses, it promises to bolster naval capabilities and readiness in support of national defense objectives.
