Immersive VR Training Revolutionizes Suicide and Sexual Assault Prevention at Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center
In a significant advancement for mental health initiatives within the military, Dr. John P. Cordle, a human factors engineer at Commander, Naval Surface Forces Atlantic (COMNAVSURFLANT), is leading a pioneering project aimed at suicide prevention among Naval personnel. This program employs cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) technology to provide immersive training environments, offering a new approach to stress management and prevention of self-harm.
Dr. Cordle explains that the VR system is designed to react dynamically to the decisions made by its users, ensuring that each training experience is unique. “The system’s ability to respond differently based on user choices helps to create a deeply engaging and educational experience,” Cordle stated. After each session, participants receive a detailed feedback report summarizing their performance and decision-making skills in simulated crisis situations.
The simplicity of the training setup, which utilizes Oculus headsets and headphones, makes the program accessible for widespread use. “The experience is intense and interactive, far more effective than traditional presentations,” said Cordle, emphasizing the hands-on nature of this innovative training.
This VR initiative is part of a broader effort led by MARMC’s Commanding Officer, Capt. Jay Young, and MARMC’s Executive Director, Dawn Dick. They aim to introduce the safeTALK program, which emphasizes the basics of recognizing warning signs of suicide through the acronym “SAFE” (Suicide Alertness for Everyone) and taking action with “TALK” (Tell, Ask, Listen, and Keepsafe).
The program integrates feedback mechanisms to assess its impact. “Participants help gauge the training’s effectiveness by completing a feedback form about their comfort level, which is then reviewed by the command,” Cordle highlighted, ensuring the program meets the needs of those it is designed to protect.
Mental health resources remain vital, and for anyone in need, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline offers 24/7 support at 1-800-273-TALK. MARMC, operating under the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), continues to provide essential support and maintenance operations for surface ships in the Mid-Atlantic region, underscoring its commitment to the well-being of its personnel.
