Honoring Aviation Pioneers: Lt. Cmdr. Lyndsay “Miley” Evans & Lt. Serena “Dug” Wileman
Lt. Cmdr. Lyndsay “Miley” Evans and Lt. Serena “Dug” Wileman have tragically passed away in a training accident. The two naval aviators, renowned for their skills and dedication, perished during a flight near Mount Rainier on October 15, 2024. Their impact, however, stretches far beyond their ranks.
Both officers had recently returned from a nine-month deployment with the Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 130, known as the “Zappers.” Their service aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) involved critical operations in the Red Sea, safeguarding coalition forces and ensuring naval freedom of navigation.
Evans and Wileman stood out during combat operations, playing pivotal roles in defending their units with precision. Their legacy is one of innovation in the face of evolving threats, crafting the tactics that would guide future naval operations.
Evans was a USC graduate and Naval Flight Officer, known for her quiet leadership and tactical expertise. She made history by participating in an all-female Super Bowl flyover. Her career was characterized by innovation in electronic warfare, shaping the strategies that her peers and successors would adopt.
Wileman, from California, was a promising young aviator known for her positivity and leadership. She led mission-critical operations against Houthi forces and excelled as a Landing Signal Officer, ensuring the safe return of her fellow aviators.
Their bond extended beyond professional accomplishments. They shared camaraderie and moments of levity, even during the harshest challenges of deployment. Their humor was as notable as their heroism.
Capt. Marvin Scott, Commander of Carrier Air Wing Three, emphasized their unmatched contribution and spirit. “Their loss is profoundly felt across Naval Aviation. They epitomized bravery and camaraderie,” said Scott.
The Navy will preserve their stories as inspirational tales of courage and dedication. Evans and Wileman leave behind a legacy that will motivate generations, exemplifying what it means to be Naval Aviators.
