Navy Week Charts Course to Tucson February 17-23

Tucson is set for an exciting celebration as this year’s Navy Week coincides with the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary, marking an impressive milestone of maritime prowess, global influence, and national security. Commander Julie Holland, Navy Office of Community Outreach director, emphasized the dual role of advanced weapons systems and highly trained personnel in maintaining American prosperity and security. “Your Sailors continue a tradition of decisive power from seabed to space,” Holland commented, highlighting the visit to Tucson as an opportunity for the public to witness the exceptional skills and dedication of Navy personnel.

The event in Tucson is part of a series of fifteen Navy Weeks planned for 2025 across the United States. Each Navy Week is strategically designed to bring the Navy closer to communities, reaching half of the U.S. population annually through a weeklong series of engagements. During the Tucson installment, more than 50 Sailors, including those with ties to the city, will participate in community outreach and educational activities.

Among the returning locals is U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Daniel Sherman, a Tucson native, who fondly recalls his upbringing filled with air shows and Air Force influence. Sherman believes this event is crucial for young Arizonans to discover unique opportunities the Navy offers, which he plans to convey through personal interaction.

The Tucson Navy Week schedule is packed with diverse activities including a proclamation and recognition ceremony at the Arizona Heroes Memorial, Discovery Night at the Children’s Museum, and Navy Day at the Reid Park Zoo. Other highlights include a presence at the 100th La Fiesta de los Vaqueros Tucson Rodeo and free live performances by Navy Band Southwest. The Navy’s commitment to community service will also be evident through volunteering efforts at various local organizations.

Vice Adm. James Pitts, the senior executive for Tucson Navy Week, will engage with community leaders and businesses, furthering relationships and collaborations. Sailors from notable commands such as the USS Tucson and USS Arizona will also contribute to the week’s events, showcasing the Navy’s extensive capabilities.

The Navy invites media coverage for these events, encouraging local engagement and awareness. Tucson Navy Week offers a unique glimpse into the Navy’s integral role in security and community support, bridging connections between military personnel and the communities they protect.
