Military Sealift Command Far East Takes Center Stage in Sama Sama

The Indo-Pacific region plays host to a vital operation ensuring military readiness through MSC Far East, a division of the U.S. Navy responsible for delivering fuel, ammunition, and supplies to American and allied naval forces. “MSC Far East is crucial for resupplying U.S. and allied ships at sea, including partners like the Philippines,” explained Senior Chief Boatswain’s Mate Andrew Werner. This logistical operation underscores the importance of collaborative support in navigating extensive maritime routes.

Sama Sama 2024, conducted from October 7-18, was a joint initiative backed by the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the U.S. Navy. The exercise saw participation from nations admiring cooperative defense, including Australia, Canada, France, and Japan. The event reinforced regional military ties while focusing on different operational competencies.

Among the critical training provided, MSC Far East focused on delivering expertise in refueling-at-sea procedures, essential for operational continuity. Werner highlighted the training’s intent, stating, “Familiarizing the Philippine Navy with underway replenishment gear was paramount. Our experts ensured that the training was comprehensive and adhered to the safest practices.” Such educational initiatives strengthen operational harmony among regional powers.

Chief Boatswain’s Mate Francisco Fuentes emphasized the practical aspect of the training. “Hands-on sessions were vital to ensure understanding of safety protocols, maintenance, and procedural nuances,” Fuentes noted. Each Navy practices evolutions differently, and cross-training provides a learning opportunity. Sama Sama 2024 encompassed a comprehensive engagement across sea and shore, involving medical, engineering, and logistical drills, besides diverse warfare exercises. Naval vessels, maritime aircraft, and specialized teams conducted operations focusing on anti-submarine, surface and air warfare, and maritime domain awareness.

MSC Far East underpins the U.S. 7th Fleet’s logistics, ensuring about 50 ships in the Indo-Pacific remain operationally equipped. The U.S. 7th Fleet, the Navy’s largest forward-deployed force, is instrumental in maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific by engaging collaboratively with allies.

As MSC celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2024, its commitment to joint military operations remains unwavering. Consisting of approximately 6,000 Civil Service Mariners, contract mariners, supporting shore staff, and active-duty personnel, MSC underpins the operational efficacy of military efforts across the spectrum.
